News & Events THE CHEESE SHOP SELLS OUT TO CHEESE LOVERS AFTER JAMIE OLIVER PROGRAMME
THE Cheese Shop in Nottingham was restocking its shelves on Tuesday (14.11.14) with Colwick Cheese – after completely selling out at the weekend.
Jamie Oliver heralded the local cheese ‘a great cheese’ in his food programme Friday Night Feast and since then, it’s sold out all over Nottingham.
Brothers Rob and Webb Freckingham of the well known cheese shop in Flying Horse Walk said that they received more than 30 emails from people all over the country – from Edinburgh to Dorset – desperate to get their hands on the soft, curdy cheese.
The brothers posted parcels of Colwick to eager cheese lovers all over the UK.
Webb said: “We have had enquiries from all over the country – and people coming into our shop to get hold of some of the cheese.
“We need to pick more up from the makers, but it has taken them quite by surprise. We could have sold hundreds of pieces.”
Colwick cheese is a soft, curdy cheese similar to cream cheese in texture but slightly more sour in flavour.
“People around here would traditionally eat the cheese with cucumber and onion steeped in vinegar. In the old days, it was made with raw milk and therefore eaten on the day – and was eaten as a treat. It was a way of using up unused milk so nothing was wasted.
“We have older customers remember having it as children and it was made in pillowcases and hung on the line.
“It’s fantastic for Nottingham that Jamie mentioned the cheese on his programme. We totally sold out of the cheese at the weekend and could have sold hundreds more.”
The cheese is made in the Belvoir Ridge dairy at Crossroads Farm in Eastwell, Leicestershire, owned by Alan and Jane Hewson.
