News & Events PAUL LEMMON AT GEORGE THORNTON ART
Don't miss Paul's exhibition at George Thornton Art, starting this Saturday
AN INTRENATIONALLY renowned British artist is set to open his first Nottingham exhibition this Saturday (22 June) at a city art gallery.
Paul Lemmon will be showing his latest work at a free exhibition at George Thornton Art in the Flying Horse Walk from 22 June to 29 June. There will also be a chance to meet the artist at a private viewing at 1pm until 4pm on 22 June.
Paul is a self-taught oil painter and his signature technique is working from his own photography. He seeks to capture the spontaneity, atmosphere and emotion of city life through rapid painting and unorthodox angles. This gives his paintings a seductive, cinematic urgency.
George Thornton, director and owner of George Thornton Art, said: “I’m really excited about Paul’s exhibition and visit. Getting him to display his work here is a real coup for the gallery, and for Nottingham – as he hasn’t exhibited in Nottingham before.
“I’m expecting a really good turnout for this week-long exhibition. Paul’s paintings are really popular at the moment as his international reputation grows. In the last couple of years he has shown in New York, Hong Kong, Paris and London. His work is popular with buyers as well as critics.”
Paul takes his inspiration from artists such as Lucian Freud, Jenny Saville and Howard Hodgkin, as well as the photographer William Eggleston’s snap-shot aesthetic and nineteenth century writer Charles Baudelaire’s descriptions of excursions around Paris.
Paul said: “These influences have left a distinctive impression on me and brought a noticeably voyeuristic tone to my work, perhaps connecting with the contemporary obsession with the hidden camera and fly-on-the-wall observation. I explore this even further by ruthlessly omitting details of the location and identity of the subject in order to engage the viewer in an even more intimate, yet open-ended way.
“My primary interest is in conveying mood and atmosphere rather than specifics. Ultimately, my aim is to immerse the viewer in my paintings, whilst allowing them to imagine their own characters and narratives in what they’re seeing.”
Paul Lemmon: An Introduction runs from 22 June until 29 June at George Thornton Art at the Flying Horse Walk in the city centre. For more information please call George Thornton on 01159 243 555.
